About Our Community
The Town of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has a rich history, evolving from a quiet farming and fishing community to a popular seaside resort and eventually a small suburban area. The Town is located on the Southeastern coast of Rhode Island and according to the 2020 Census has a population is 14,532. Narragansett is a historically popular beachfront tourist destination throughout the summer and early fall months. The town's three state beaches and one town beach collectively average over 14,000 visitors per day. Coupled with the influx of visitors and tourists who attend our other attractions and special events, seasonal populations during these months can easily increase to 50,000 people. The town of Narragansett occupies a narrow strip of land running along the eastern bank of the Pettaquamscutt River (aka Narrow River) to the shore of Narragansett Bay on the Atlantic Ocean.
The Town of Narragansett was separated from South Kingstown in 1888 and incorporated as a town in 1901. The town has a total area of 37.8 square miles, of which 14.1 square miles is land and 23.6 square miles (62.56%) is water. At the southern end of the town is the Port of Galilee, the 4th largest commercial fishing port in the northeast. Home to over 250 fishing vessels, Galilee is also the location of Interstate Navigation, a ferry service that transports nearly a quarter of a million people to and from Block Island, the town of New Shoreham, every year on their fleet of 6 ferries. In the North end of Narragansett is the University of Rhode Island's (URI) Bay Campus. The overall campus currently consists of 25 URI buildings; with construction of a large scale Ocean Robotics Laboratory planned, which contain a mix of offices, research laboratories, classrooms, and meeting spaces, as well as a two-megawatt nuclear reactor. In addition, the URI Department of Ocean Engineering is located on the campus, with the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) laboratories bordering on the north. From September through May our town is home to between 6,000 - 8,000 students from the University of Rhode Island's main campus located in nearby Kingston.
